HOW TO USE THE LIBRARY
TO BORROW LIBRARY ITEMS:
Library materials must be signed out no matter how long they are to be borrowed, if you are removing it from the library; please sign it out. If the item has a card in the back pocket and has not been barcoded, please remove the card from the card pocket in the back of the book, print your name clearly on the first available line. Leave the card with or for the librarian to enter into the computer system and file. Please note the date due in your planner as a reminder to you of the date the item is due back, usually two weeks from the date you are signing out the item. If you would like to renew an item or need it for a longer period, please speak to Mrs. Bonsma.
To borrow a non current issue of a magazine, please sign it out on the sign out sheet on the librarians desk, if she is not available.
Please refer to your student handbook for other library expectations.
COMING SOON: The library is in the process of barcoding the library for ease in signing out and returning materials. Each student has been assigned a library number to be stored with the librarian for her use only. There will be a sign out sheet for you to use if the librarian is not available, so that you may sign out iems your self., that will later be entered into the system.
TO RETURN AN ITEM:
Leave the items on the book cart or desk. The librarian will enter the items as returned and put them back on the shelf. Please do not return items to the shelf yourself. It is best if you can return an item when the librarian is present, you are responsible for the item until the librarian has returned it into the system.
LOCATING ITEMS IN THE LIBRARY
The library catalogue is available online from the school web site at www.dchs.com, just follow the link to the library and then the library cataloge. You may search the cataloge by title, author or subject/keyword. If you are searching from home and wish to reserve a book you may use the request section of the web search, and the librarian will locate the book and hold it for you for the next school day. This service is available om Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday only.
ELECTRONIC RESOURCES
The DCHS library has a subscription to a electronic database for your use. On the library web page you will see a link for Christianity Today, for the password see Mrs. Bonsma. We are looking into other databases for your use. Remember that if you have a public library card, there are links on the school library web site to the public libraries they have numerous electronic resources available on their sites. See Mrs. Bonsma, if you would like assistance with learing how to make use of those resources.

NON-FICTION
All books, except the fiction are arranged on the shelves according to their subjects using the Dewey Decimal Classification System.
000 - 099 Generalities, e.g. encyclopedias
100 - 199 Philosophy, psychology, logic, etc.
200 - 299 Religion
300 - 399 Social science, e.g. political science, law, education, etc.
400 - 499 Language
500 - 599 Pure Science, e.g. mathematics, physics, botany, etc.
600 - 699 Applied science and technology, e.g. medicine, agriculture, engineering.
700 - 799 The arts, e.g. painting, music, recreation.
800 - 899 Literature and rhetoric
900 - 999 History, geography and travel
Within each subject the books are arranged according to the author, The authors' last names are placed in alphabetical order. Each subject has its own call number to represent it.

796 Outdoor Games
971 History of Canada
If the book is about a small part of a larger subject, decimal points are used.

Below each number is either one, two, or three letters which represent the author's name and help keep the books in place according to the author.

In addition to the call number, reference have the letter R or REF above the call number.

FOLIOS:
A few books called folios, which are to tall to stand on the shelves are marked F to show they are tall. They lie flat on the shelf near the call number for the book.

Legacy - The Natural History of Ontario
FICTION
Fiction books have no call number. Instead, they have the letters "Fic" to designate them as fiction. Beneath theses letters are the first three letters of the author's last name. They are arranged alphabetically by the last names of the authors. You can search by different genre for the type that you like on the library catalogue.
MAGAZINES:
Our library subscribes to a number of magazines, these are valuable for current information. CURRENT ISSUES MAY NOT LEAVE THE LIBRARY. If you wish to sign out an back issue of a magazine to read or study at home please do so with Mrs. Bonsma. We also have a number of indexes available for some of the subscriptions.
COMPUTERS
The library computers are available for you to use to do school research, type up assignments and printing. During lunch hours and spares you may check your email. NO GAMES ARE TO BE PLAYED ON THE COMPUTERS. Violations of the use and purpose of the computes will result in loss of computer privileges in the school.
